  • HMCOL works to strengthen people’s connection with nature and improve people’s health and the health of ecosystems, through shared outdoor experiences. As part of its work, HMCOL builds and maintains trails to facilitate outdoor experiences for people of all ages and backgrounds.
They hired Beacon to devise an extra special way to celebrate the HBC trail; provide hikers with a guide that would outline the trail’s history, ecology, and hiking and camping opportunities; and make it possible for those not able to get out on the trail to still learn about it and enjoy it.

The problem

People love B.C.’s historic trails, but some aren’t well known and can be challenging to use for people with different abilities or limited opportunities to travel.

The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) Trail stretches 74 kilometres from just outside Hope, B.C. to Tullameen, B.C. It’s one of the largest and most historically significant trails in B.C. The trail is maintained and promoted by the Hope Mountain Centre for Outdoor Learning (HMCOL). It’s beautiful and its history is fascinating. But it’s a rugged, hidden gem, too.

HMCOL wanted to make it better known, more accessible, and more fun for everyone.

Our solution

To commemorate the trail, and provide valuable historic and recreational information to diverse audiences, we:

  • Researched, wrote, and designed a 77-page book as a companion piece to a detailed map of the trail
  • Combined facts with fictional “campfire” stories to create an immersive experience for those hiking the trail and readers at home
  • Created custom illustrations to make historical figures jump off the page and into readers’ imaginations
  • Incorporated extensive historical facts with contemporary information to enhance trail users’ experiences, and serve as an accurate and trusted reference for any reader or hiker

Ultimately, the book brings the trail to life for new hikers, experienced back country campers, and “armchair” enthusiasts alike, and more broadly promotes HMCOL’s values, goals, and activities.
