- The City of Vancouver wanted to ensure greater audience participation and use resources that matched the quality and prestige of Women Deliver materials. They asked Beacon to design Session assets that would not only complement the Women Deliver brand, but also clearly delineate the many different programs and activities in the Sessions.
The problem
In 2019, the City of Vancouver hosted the Women Deliver Conference, the largest global conference on gender equality and the health, rights, and well-being of girls and women.
With pricing and public esteem similar to the TED conference, over 8,000 high-profile world leaders and influencers were expected to attend the Conference—but few avenues existed to connect the event with local residents.
To connect local audiences to the issues raised by the global conference, the City presented the Women Deliver Satellite Sessions—a free four-day public event offering thought-provoking workshops and discussions on gender equity.
But they needed a lot of branded assets for the Sessions, and they needed them in a hurry.

Our solution
Despite the short timeline, after reviewing the brief, we pushed the brand and assets further than the City thought possible, as we:
- Identified a need for parallel brands for other women’s equity initiatives, including Women4Politics and the Women’s Equity Strategy
- In six weeks, created over a hundred assets in this visual language, including logos, posters, social graphics, photo backdrops, pins, event schedules, infographics, tri-pillars, name tags, signage, and more
- Took a single design element (a tri-coloured line) and evolved it into a modern and comprehensive visual language that could be used across all assets

Women deliver satellite sessions
While creating the WDSS assets, we identified a pattern to the events, enabling us to devise a naming convention and color scheme that would clearly indicate which events were workshops, part of a regularly scheduled set, peripheral panels, or special events. This schema made the conference easier for attendees to understand.

Women 4 Politics
Women4Politics provided the opportunity for 11 young women to participate in an orientation day, meet with a mentor, and take part in a Mock Council meeting that explored important issues facing our city.

The payoff
With just 10 days for promotion, 16 of 18 sessions sold out completely, and 1,179 attendees participated. The Sessions featured more than 60 speakers and included an art exhibit, panels and discussions, workshops (including a walking tour), special networking and evening events, plus daily child-minding services.
