A career with Beacon.

Job description

Graphic Designer.

We’re looking for a highly skilled graphic designer who finds inspiration everywhere and can help us level up our client work while mentoring younger designers from our team. The ideal candidate will be Canadian or have a valid Canadian visa, and will have significant experience in page layout using InDesign and one or more parallel skills (e.g. pattern making, brush making, mastery of textures, second language, web design skills, font making experience, art direction, etc.) and will have or be willing to acquire a certificate in accessibility as Beacon adheres to minimum accessibility standards.

Tasks

  • Own your deliverables, while keeping the team informed
  • Mentor and teach your colleagues any skills you possess that they do not
  • Design and edit PDFs, presentations, logos, promotional assets, etc, as requested by management and/or the clients
  • Be detail oriented, double check all of your work
  • Use industry standard design software from the Adobe Creative Suite
  • Learn any new software as required by management
  • Research inspiration as needed
  • Find and edit royalty free photographs, including close-cropping and coming up with cool filters and image treatments

What we’re looking for

Requirements

  • 6+ years of experience as a graphic designer
  • An exceptional portfolio that oozes quality and attention to detail
  • A mind bending understanding of InDesign and avid use of all its wonderful style functions (including object styles)
  • Ability to manipulate photos and create composites in Photoshop
  • Ability to create logos, badges, and icons in Adobe Illustrator
  • A willingness to keep up with the latest software capabilities

Assets

  • Experience working in WordPress and/or SquareSpace
  • Basic understanding of CSS
  • Experience working with and coaching young designers
  • Certificate (of any level) in accessibility

Traits

  • You pride yourself on excellent communication. You use appropriate channels for the situation at hand, add professional humour as called for, type quickly, and speak with confidence and humility. You respond to messages thoroughly and in a timely manner.
  • You are a team player, willing to support when needed and open to feedback. You know that everybody is after the same thing: deliverables that create results for the client.
  • You love design so much. You are always looking to improve, both in your ability to ideate and use the software. You express an enthusiasm for design as a communication device and drive to exceed expectations.
You nerd out over an organized workflow. Your friends would vote you the most organized person in the room. You are willing to adopt new systems of work as required (ie. KPI tracking, time tracking tools, research methods, naming conventions, etc.) because you know it will dial things in for the company and your job.
  • You practically gamify your work by challenging yourself to deliver to the highest possible quality within the allotted time. Getting faster and better gets you stoked.
You are passionate about using InDesign and recognize that it’s pretty much the best software ever. You know the ins and outs of master pages, object styles, paragraph styles, character styles and table/cell styles… and you keep those styles named in a logical way and organized into folders as needed.
